Urbandale, IA -- Fred Schiek, 79, passed away peacefully on Jan 11, 2014. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Fred was born in Readlyn, Iowa to Lydia (Fink) and Karl Otto Schiek on Sept. 11, 1934. He graduated from Clarion High School and Drake University. Fred married Barbara Mariga on January 26, 1957 in Belmond, Iowa. Fred worked for EMC Insurance Company for 42 years retiring in 2001 as Chief Operating Officer. A member of the EMC Board of Directors 15 years, serving as Chairman of the Board from 2005 - 2010. Also a board member of the EMC Group, Dakota Fire of Bismarck, ND, Hamilton Mutual of Cincinnati, OH, EMC National Life, and the EMC Foundation board of directors. He was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 2012.

Fred was a member of Sierra Club, Drake Presidents Club, EMC 20 year club and Golden K Kiwanis. He was an officer of the Des Moines and Omaha CPCU chapters and was Treasurer of the Moingona Girl Scouts of Central Iowa.

Fred is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Mary Jo and husband Scott Youngberg, son-in-law John Popowitz and grandchildren Heather, Justin and Amanda Youngberg and Kaelyn Popowitz; brother Richard (Judy), sister Dolores Waldon (Mel), sister-in-law Jayne Schiek, brother-in law Jim Mariga, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by daughter Patty, brother John, and his parents. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame or Holy Trinity Church.
