TOWNSEND, Massachusetts -- Gary D. Evans, 73, of Townsend, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Mt. Watatic in Ashburnham while hiking. Mr. Evans was born in Dows, Iowa, May 29, 1940, a son of Arleta Evans and the late Donald Evans and has resided in Townsend for over 40 years. For the past 35 years, Gary owned and operated Evans On The Common, a store specializing in unique high quality footwear, clothing and gifts. Prior to that he had been a regional sales manager for Wolverine Shoe Company, and many years ago worked at Anwelt Shoe Company in Fitchburg.

He was a member of the Pepperell-Groton Rotary Club, Sierra Club and Townsend Ridge Country Club. Gary was a member of Friends of the Townsend Public Library, Montachusett Ski Club and a supporter of Townsend Ecumenical Outreach. He was a former member of the Townsend - Lunenburg Rotary Club. He enjoyed traveling and spending time in the outdoors. During the early 1960's Gary served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was involved in the Cuban Bay of Pigs blockade effort.

Besides his mother of Iowa, he leaves two sons and a daughter-in-law, Matthew A. Evans of Lunenburg, Michael D. and Heidi Evans of Tyngsboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Gilmar Santos of Worcester; two brothers, Roger Evans of Thailand, Mark Evans of Iowa; a sister, Charlotte Riley of Iowa; his former wife, Sheila (Provost) of Townsend; three grandchildren, Aaron Evans, Amanda Ryan and Nikki Ryan.

EVANS -- Calling hours are 4-7 P.M., Wednesday, January 8th at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, (Rte. 119) Townsend Center. A celebration of Gary's of life will be held starting at 6 PM Thursday, January 9th at Townsend Ridge Country Club, Scales Lane, Townsend. A time of remembrance will be offered at 6:30 PM.
