August 19, 1915 --- September 26, 1999

Gladys M. Huebsch, 84, died Sept. 26, 1999, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A rosary will be said at 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Additional services will be held Oct. 11 at Everson Funeral Home in Williston, N.D. Burial of her remains will follow in Williston City Cemetery in the family plot.

Mrs. Huebsch was born Aug. 19, 1915, north of Epping, N.D., to Ole and Anna Hagen Askvig. She graduated from high school in 1934 and was active in sports. After high school, she lived in Oregon and California. She was married to Vincent Huebsch on Aug. 9, 1943, in Burbank, Calif. While he was in the service, Mrs. Huebsch returned to Williston and waited for him to return from overseas. They built a trailer home and lived in Nebraska while Mr. Huebsch attended aircraft and engine school. He worked for Pacific Northern Airlines in Anchorage while Mrs. Huebsch stayed in California, waiting for a home to be built in Anchorage. Mrs. Huebsch arrived in Anchorage in 1948. Their area had no modern utilities and lacked street lights, sidewalks and paved streets. Mrs. Huebsch worked at Rexall Drugs downtown.

In April 1949, the Anchorage Times carried an article stating 42,000 acres would be opened to veterans to homestead. She pushed her husband to file on 160 acres of land, which they obtained in a drawing. The land was four miles east of downtown Anchorage with no roads or trails. It took seven miles to reach the land in a roundabout way, around water and marshes. They proved up on the land in 1952 and patented.

Mrs. Huebsch had been working at Denali Drug, using newly opened roads on the east side. Her husband retired in 1975 and built their dream home on the highest point on the homestead. She enjoyed dancing and crossword puzzles.

Her family said, "She was loved by all and will be greatly missed by all who knew her."

The Huebschs celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 9, 1993. Mrs. Huebsch is survived by her husband, Vincent Huebsch of Anchorage; sisters, Emma Skogan and Viola Roed of Williston; brothers-in-law, Alfred Huebsch and William Huebsch, both of Iowa; sisters-in-law, Margaret Dickerson of Arizona and Betty Jordt of Iowa; four nieces; and 10 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Beatta. Memorial bequests may be made to the charity of choice. Arrangements by Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown.
