Henrietta (Christians) Rietema
May 21, 1919 --- October 30, 2013

Henrietta Rietema, 94, of Kanawha passed away Wednesday October 30, 2013 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond. Funeral services for Henrietta Rietema will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Wright Christian Reformed Church south of Kanawha with Pastor Daniel Lindley officiating. Burial will be at Wright Christian Reformed Church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East Second Street, in Kanawha and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Henrietta was born May 21, 1919 to Nick and Nellie (Beninga) Christians in Amsterdam Township in Hancock County. She attended country schools through the 8th grade. Later, at the age of 52, she completed her high school equivalency, which was a goal that she was happy to achieve.

Henrietta was united in marriage to Arthur Rietema on August 9, 1939 at the Rietema family farm near Kanawha. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage in the Kanawha area. Henrietta’s faith was very important to her. She was a lifelong member of Wright Christian Reformed Church where she served in Ladies’ Aid. She was an active participant in Bible studies and her church life was very important to her. Henrietta enjoyed welcoming friends into her home. Most of all, she enjoyed family get-togethers and spending time with her grandchildren.

Henrietta is survived by her children, Jean (Joel) Brower of Byron Center, Michigan, Marilyn (Dennis) TerHark of Kanawha and Richard (Sally) Rietema of Zeeland, Michigan; daughter-in-law Peggy Rietema of Grand Rapids, Michigan; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister Nettie Assink of Kanawha and sisters-in-law Mavis Christians, Grada Rietema, and Winifred Pommer. Henrietta was preceded in death by her husband Arthur in 2009; son Larry Rietema; sisters Tena Ruter, Tillie Verbrugge, Minnie Rietema, Marguerite Hensel; and brothers Edward Christians, Herman Christians, Mike Christians, and Jim Christians.
