Charles Byron Mandsager, 86, of Loveland, Colorado and formerly of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died October 9, 2013 at McKee Medical Center in Loveland. He was born March 15, 1927 in Hardy, Iowa to Laurence and Jessie Mandsager. He attended country school, Renwick High School, and graduated from Augustana Academy, Canton SD and then enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1950. He later earned a Masters Degree in Sociology from the University of South Dakota.

Chuck met Sarah Christopherson at Augustana College and they were married in December 1949. They lived in Sioux Falls for 44 years where they were members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, and after retiring to Colorado, were members of Zion Lutheran Church. While a student at college he worked at the Minnehaha County jail with his friends, Howard Hovland and Luther Mandsager. In 1955 he started as a volunteer for the District Court of South Dakota and later was named as Chief Federal Probation Officer for the State of South Dakota. After retirement in March 1982 he kept working, first as a Hobie Cat sailboat dealer, and then as director of the Glory House, a halfway house for drug and alcohol offenders.

Sports were an important part of Chuck's life. He played football in college, being an honor athlete from 1949-50 and later was inducted into the Augustana Athletic Hall of Fame. Chuck loved water sports, hunting, and tennis where he participated in the Senior Olympics. He and Sally enjoyed traveling together. A favorite hobby of his was gardening.

Chuck is survived by his daughters: Miriam (Frank Kunstal) of Loveland, Colorado and Anne (Lane Williamson) of Charlotte, North Carolina; daughter-in-law Doreen Mandsager of Charlotte, North Carolina; grandchildren: Kirsten (Dustin Mackie) of Cleveland, Ohio, Rachel (James Graef) of Beaver Creek, Colorado, Ali Mandsager, Tedd Mandsager, and Carly Mandsager all of Charlotte, North Carolina; and great-granddaughter, Autumn of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by his siblings: Robert Mandsager of Marshalltown, Iowa, Mary Rogness of Hendricks, Minnesota, Janice Grinde of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Rachel Pechauer of Sun City, Arizona; and two sisters-in-law, Susan Christopherson of Ridgefield, Washington and Kathy Mandsager of Loveland, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally; his sons, Tedd and Mark; and his brother, David.

Services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Loveland, Colorado and at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, October 18, 2013 at 1 p.m. followed by committal at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorials can be designated to: The Sarah Mandsager Music Scholarship at Augustana College; Glory House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Zion Lutheran Church, Loveland, Colorado; and ChildVoice International.
