Sudden Death of Prominent Business Man

It was with great surprise and much sorrow that our citizens learned Monday [July 14, 1913] of E. Frank Newell, who passed away about 7:00 o'clock that morning [in Kanawha, Iowa]. A few days before he had been attending to his affairs as usual, but owing to a trouble that that later developed as appendicitis he had been under treatment for several days. His condition changed to the worse so rapidly that nothing in the surgical line could be attempted for his relief and his final hours were passed mostly in an unconscious state.

Mr. Newell was born in New York state on Sept. 8, 1849, living to the age of 68 years, 10 months and 6 days. On October 26, 1875 he was married to Jennie Bryan, who with four children survive. One son died in infancy, the children living being Mrs. W. E. Carpenter of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Mrs. L. M. Beaven of Lebanon, Ind.; Miss Sadie M. Newell of Kanawha, and Oscar B. Newell of Oskaloosa, Iowa. Two brothers and a sister also survive him. Mr. Newell came to Iowa in 1866, residing for a number of years in Buchanan and Hardin counties. In 1900 the family came to Kanawha, where Mr. Newell has conducted a mercantile business up to his death. All of the children of the deceased were present at the funeral services, also two brothers of Mrs. Newell from Spirit Lake, Iowa.

This sudden separation of an exemplary citizen and a kind father and husband from friends and family comes with deep regret which their friends can but weakly express. Mr. Newell has been on of our leading and conservative business men since the early days of the town, and wherever he has lived has always held positions of honor and trust of more or less importance.

Brief services were held at the house this Wednesday morning, and friends were given an opportunity to view the body. The interment will take place at Spirit Lake, Iowa, the funeral party going this afternoon via Clarion, a number of businessmen also going as far as that town. Numerous beautiful flower designs have come from friends of the family, and from business associates and fellow lodge members of the deceased.
