Baggs - Conservation Officer Drowned Sunday In River

Maurice Baggs, 31, of Alta, drowned Saturday when he slipped from the dam in Cherokee and tumbled into the Little Sioux river. Baggs was widely known among northwest Iowa sportsmen, his territory as game warden including Pocahontas, Buena Vista, and Cherokee counties. Baggs was checking fishermen's licenses when he lost his foothold on the slippery wood dam and fell into fifteen feet of water. the river was above normal due to recent rains. The body was recovered after a two hour search. Baggs had removed his hip boots to swim but was unable to save himself. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Methodist church in Hardy. He was survived by his wife, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Baggs and a sister.
