Swede was born October 1, 1916, in Dayton, Iowa, the son of Reuben A. and Teckla C. (Frey) Liljegren. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Swede was united in marriage to Carey J. Fosen September 12, 1954, in Waterloo, Iowa. Carey died June 8, 2000. The couple lived in Waterloo for many years before moving to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home apartments in 1990. The U.S. Postal Service, Waterloo office, employed Swede for 25 years before his retirement in the early 80s. He was a life member of the V.F.W. in Waterloo and joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church upon moving to Cedar Falls.

Surviving Swede is his son and daughter in-law, John and Connie Liljegren of Cedar Falls and two granddaughters, Crystal of Coralville, Iowa and Cari Ann of Ames, Iowa. Swede died Monday, November 17, 2003, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. His wife; two brothers, Harold and a brother in infancy, Theodore, and a sister, Ruth Nordstrom preceded him in death.
