MASON CITY — Jon A. Finlayson, 73, Mason City, died Sunday, August 11, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A funeral service for Jon will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City, with Pastor Shane Phillpott officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy. 18 West, Mason City, with military graveside honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family of Jon would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial in his memory, may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of North Iowa, or the North Iowa Humane Society in Mason City.

Jon Alan Finlayson was born on August 31, 1939, in Mason City, the son of R. E. and Madalene R. (Luitt) Finlayson. He graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in 1953, graduating from Mason City High School in 1957, and also attended Mason City Junior College. Jon was inducted into the Navy on December 8, 1960, in San Francisco, Calif., and was stationed on the USS Hollister and was honorably discharged on February 26, 1962. Following his service to his country, Jon went into the insurance business with his father, R.E., and his brother, R.J., and was in business for 20-plus years. Jon also worked for Kabrick Distributing, Cannella Wholesale, AEA, and for Newton Manufacturing in Newton, Iowa, until his death.

Jon was united in marriage to Lois Hummel on September 15, 1963, in Klemme, Iowa. Jon enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers, golfing, bowling and fishing, but most of all, Jon loved to spoil his grandchildren and great-grandson, and loved being with his family. Jon was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Mason City, past member of the Masonic Lodge of Mason City, and El-Kahir Shrine Lodge of Cedar Rapids.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lois Finlayson of Mason City; two daughters: Michelle "Shelley" Marti (Lance Smith) of Mason City, and Kris (Mike) Brass of Rudd; three grandchildren: Matthew Seifert of Algona, Kaci and Nicole Shafer of Rudd; great-grandson, Xavier Shafer; son-in-law, Brian MacEachern of Plymouth, Mass; sister, Jan (Cliff) Thomas of Dothan, Ala; sister-in-law, Nancy Finlayson of Mason City; three nieces: Ann (the Reverend Gene) Gurley, Meri (Donald) Tauzier, and Jeanene (Mike) Blickenderfer; nephew, Scott (Uta) Finlayson; his beloved dog, Libby; as well as many other extended family members and friends. Jon was preceded in death by his parents, R. E. and Madalene Finlayson; daughter, Jill MacEachern; son-in-law, James Mart; and a brother, Jim Finlayson. Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel
