JOPLIN, Mo. — Francis Flynn Huibsch, age, 83, of Joplin, passed away at his home at 4:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013.

Born Jan. 31, 1930, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, he was the son of the late Martin Vincent Huibsch and Mary Caroline Flynn Huibsch. A child of the depression, he went to work at an early age to help the family. At the age of 35, he received his G.E.D. with the assistance of Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation. He later obtained an Associate degree from Eagle Grove Community College. He received his Bachelor degree in Education and his Masters degree in Counseling, both from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. In 1973 he moved to Joplin and began his career with Missouri State Vocational Rehabilitation, where he served until his retirement. This was a way of encouraging and helping others as he had been helped in his early life. He also served eight years in the National Guard and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.

On May 26, 1956, he married Margaret Ann Fitzgerald in Clare, Iowa. She survives. Additional survivors include their son, Col. Joseph F. Huibsch and wife, Parichat, of Washington, DC; four grandchildren, Alexander, Amanda and Pamela Huibsch and Richard Burchfield; one great-grandson, Richard Burchfield; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edmond M. and Joseph C. Huibsch; and a sister, Mary Catherine Wanken Killelea.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, due to remodeling of the church. Fr. Henry Grodecki will officiate. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery with John Greenwood, John and Joseph Wanken and Larry Johnson serving as pallbearers. Recitation of the Rosary will be at Parker Mortuary at 7 p.m. Thursday, after which, the family will receive friends. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
