Rockford — Clarence H. “Rex” Theilen, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Clarence (Rex) Henry Theilen was born in a small farm house in rural Rockford, Iowa, on October 7, 1938, to Harry and Bessie Theilen. He attended elementary school in a one-room school house. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November of 1957 and served his country on the USS Boyd DD 544 until he was honorably discharged in May of 1962 and then continued in the Navy Reserves for several years. After marrying the love of his life, Barbara Miller on January 11, 1959, at Morgan Methodist Church, rural Dows, Iowa, Rex spent his working career at Blue Ribbon Beef, Libbey Owens Ford, Northwestern Cement, and retired from the Mine, Safety, and Health Administration, Department of Labor, as an electrical inspector in 2002. He enjoyed watching and raising purple martins, playing his guitar and singing, was fascinated with astrology, attending Navy reunions, watching NASCAR and the Minnesota Vikings and most of all his five beautiful grandchildren.

Rex is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Dawn Humburg and husband Keith, Humboldt, Debbie Dow and husband Jim, Rockford; grandchildren, Dustin Humburg, Keslie Humburg, Dylan Humburg, Marcus Dow and Sabrina Dow. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Hammje and husband Marlin.

Clarence will be laid to rest in a Celebration of Life ceremony at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. with a short reception and burial following the ceremony. Burial will take place in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, where military honors will be presented by the Mason City Veterans. Visitation will be held prior to the ceremony on Monday, July 15, 2013, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel. Donations may be made in Rex’s memory to The American Cancer Society.
