Lars Gerhard Johnson

Lars G. Johnson was born on March 18, 1886, in Kendall County, Illinois, to Edmund and Julia (Markus) Johnson. He was baptized in the Lutheran church near Lisbon, Illinois, by Rev. P.A. Rasmussen. At the age of five, the family moved to Belmond, Iowa, where he was confirmed in the St. Olaf Lutheran Church by Rev. H. C. Holm. On March 18, 1908, he was united in marriage to Lena Nelson near Belmond, Iowa, by Pastor Holm. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive.

Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Minnesota where he spent the rest of his life at various places working as mechanic, farmer and implement worker. In the spring of 1953, he suffered a severe heart attack, which forced him to retire from full time work and he spent a few winters in California for his health. He has been in failing health since, and on November 13, 1960, was taken to the local hospital where he passed away on January 6, 1961. He has been a member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church since 1935 and has been active as a Sunday School and Bible class teacher many years.

Surviving are his wife and children: Lawrence of Poulsbo, Washington, Gerald of Manzanola, Colorado, Evelyn (Mrs. Joe Estebo) of Lemon Grove, California, Gerhard, a missionary to Poona, India, Luther and Lillian (Mrs. Harvey Larson) of Clarkfield; two sisters: Mrs. Millie Sigstad of Clarkfield and Mrs. Tillie Benson of Belmond, Iowa; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. Preceding him in death are his parents and five brothers.
