Alonzo Wharton was born March 11, 1901, at Clarion, Iowa, the son of Thomas J. and Melinda (Rose) Wharton, and moved with his family to Litchfield, Minnesota, in 1918. On April 24, 1931, he was united in marriage to Ruby Hanson. Two children, Gerane and David were born. In 1943 the Wharton family moved from Litchfield to Clarkfield where Alonzo operated the Clarkfield Hatchery until 1963, at which time he became the acting postmaster, retiring in 1965 after a heart attack. He was a former mayor of Clarkfield, a member of the school board and the hospital board, and was an active member of the United Methodist Church as well as the Masonic Lodge. In 1973 Mr. and Mrs. Wharton moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo. Mr. Wharton passed away April 28 in the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital.
Survivors include his wife Ruby; son David of Flint, Michigan; daughter Gerane Park of Napa, California; four grandchildren; sister, Florence McKay and brother, Claire Wharton, both of Aitkin, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Iva and Pearl Wharton; and brothers: Robert, Elmer, Martin, Ray and Roscoe.
