Dennis Peter ‘Denny’ Lickteig passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the Algona Manor Care Center at the age of 97. He became a resident of the Algona Manor in January, 2013.

Denny was born June 6, 1915, in Richmond, Kan., the son of John Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Ohmes) Lickteig. The family moved to Iowa, first to Corwith and then to Wesley, where they lived on the Apple Treat Farm. Denny graduated from Wesley High School in 1935. For a short time, he drove a Standard Oil tank wagon. In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S Army and served during WWII. He was discharged in 1945. He married Luella ‘Toot’ Waldschmidt in Omaha, Neb., on Dec. 2, 1942. After Denny's discharge from the service, the couple moved to Clear Lake, where he again worked for Standard Oil. Denny started farming near St. Benedict, in 1947, and continued until his retirement in 1978. Toot and Denny moved to Algona in 1977, where he enjoyed vegetable gardening, caring for his beloved roses, fishing and traveling, including going to Reno, Nev., each year for 20 years for Army reunions. Together, Toot and Denny enjoyed working the daily crossword puzzles and playing cribbage with friends. Denny was a long-time member of the VFW, the Wesley American Legion, the Knights of Columbus Council 952 and St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona.

He and Toot raised seven children during their 70 years of marriage: Richard (Delores) Lickteig of Wesley; Anita (Dave) Campbell of Saylorville; Mike (Shirley) Lickteig of Perry; Gene (Vicki) Lickteig of Urbandale; Coleen (Larry) Kollasch of Algona; Bud (Kathy) Lickteig of West Des Moines; and Carol (Dale) Plathe of Algona.
