December 27, 1935 --- July 12, 2012

Harlan "Butch" Elbert - age 76, of Pocahontas, passed away Thursday, July 12, 2012, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa. Harlan Edward Elbert was born December 27, 1935, at Fenton, Iowa. He was the son of Leo and Alice (Hansen) Elbert. He graduated from Corwith High School in 1955. Harlan served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany serving his country from 1957 - 1959 during the Korean War. On September 4, 1965, Harlan married Betty Trenary at Corwith and resided there until 1967. They then moved to the family farm near Pocahontas where they farmed and raised their family. Betty passed away in 2000. Butch was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and AMVETS. Butch loved farming, both in the field and on the road. He enjoyed his many road trips to Fonda, Emmetsburg, Sloan and Nebraska, where he enjoyed meeting up with friends, family and stopping to watch Bald Eagles and eating crab legs. He enjoyed camping, watching sports and especially RFD TV. One of his proudest possessions was his grandchildren. He was a very involved grandpa who was extremely patient and full of fun, always sharing a story, teasing or taking time to visit with them. Butch truly missed having Betty by his side the last 12 years but chose to fill that void with spending time with his children and grandchildren. You could always count on Butch to say something funny, catch you off guard and bring a smile to your face because of his clever whit. Butch was blessed with many special friends and quickly became a friend to everyone he met.

Survivors include his children, Troy (Jeanne) Elbert of Pocahontas; Angela Elbert of West Des Moines and Marlan (Brenda) Elbert of Stanton, NE; eight grandchildren, Hope (Sam) Radke of Albert City; Blake, Brooke, Trent and Ryan Elbert of Pocahontas; Chelsea Elbert of West Des Moines; and Trey and Adison Elbert of Stanton, NE; brothers, Jerry Elbert of Savage, MN and Dean (Florence) Elbert of Sun City, FL; brother-in-law, John Drummond of Wilmette, IL; sister-in-law, Donalyn Barth of San Jose, CA and many nieces & nephews. Butch was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; sister, Carol Drummond; and favorite "son" Duke.
