Brother Dies
Mrs. Hal E. Rogers received word of the death Sunday of her brother, Harry Shurtz. Mr. Shurtz died at his home in Eagle Grove late Saturday after a long illness. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Tom Benedict, Eagle Grove and Mrs. Tom Moore, Kanawha and Mrs. Rogers, a sister, of Luverne. Funeral services were held in Eagle Grove Tuesday with burial there.

Harry Shurtz, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Shurtz, was born at Sodus Point, New York, July 23, 1869. When he was eight years old he, with his parents, moved to Lake City, Iowa. He attended the public schools of Sodus Point and Lake City, completing the high school provided, which was through the tenth grade. It was in 1892 at Lake City that he began his career with the Northwestern Railroad which continued through the years until his retirement.

He was married to Anna B. Collett at Onawa, Iowa on October 1, 1893. To this union three children were born, two girls and one boy. The son, Sergeant Clarence V. Shurtz was killed in France, July 29, 1918. The Eagle Grove American Legion Post is named after him. Anita, Mrs. T. L. Benedict resides in Eagle Grove and Erna, Mrs. T. F. Moore lives on a farm near Kanawha, Iowa.

Mr. Shurtz' work led him with his family to several Iowa towns before settling in Eagle Grove. Mr. Shurtz came here to work in November, 1907 and he was joined by the family in 1908.

He was a member of the Congregational Church; of the Bower Lodge No. 464 A.F. and A.M. of which he was Past Master; of Eagle Grove Chapter No. 123; of Medina Council No. 26; and was Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 114. He was also a member of Golden Links Lodge No. 68 I.O.O.F. He was interested and active in all of these orders.

He read much, had a good memory, and was always a very interesting conversationalist.

He passed from this life, after an illness of many months, on Sunday, May 6, at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Besides his wife and daughters he is survived by his sister, Mrs. H. E. Rogers of Luverne, Iowa; one granddaughter, Mrs. Bernard Collins of Clarion, Iowa; and two great granddaughters; besides other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Kastler Funeral home. Rev. Walter Ross, pastor of the Congregational church officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
