Velva Ione (Studley) Root, the daughter of Harry and Lena (Strain) Studley, was born April 4, 1924, at Eagle Grove, Iowa. She graduated from Dows Community High School in 1941 and attended junior college. On November 25, 1942, Velva was united in marriage to Alvin Root at Princeton, Missouri. She was a homemaker until 1979 when she worked for Merediths for 10 years. Velva lived in Kamrar for 8 years, rural Galt for 28 years and Dows for 53 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Dows.

Velva passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion at the age of 89 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin in 1970 and a son-in-law, David Benton. Survivors include her six daughters: Denise (Richard) Hocraffer of Clarion, Rhonda Benton of Rowan, Donita (Duane) Odland of Wasilla, AK, Collette (Merlyn) Wiarda of Dows, Renee (Tony) Holmes of Dows and Luana Nair of Spencer; 11 grandchildren: Tanja Sanders, Todd Hocraffer, Casey (Cory) Howell, Nesha Benton, Brant (Sarah) Odland, Megan (Jay) Nystrom, Jocelyn (Josh) Bell, Shaylyn Wiarda, Logan Holmes, Tori Nair and J.J. Nair; 10 great - grandchildren: Hillari Sanders, Denton Sanders, Phoebe Sanders, Adelynn Howell, Ember Howell, Zander Schwienebart, Emma Odland, Sadie Odland, Madalyn Nystrom and Mackenzie Nystrom; and many relatives and friends.

In honoring Velva's wishes, there will be a private interment. Her family invites everyone to join them for a celebration of her life at the Dows Community Center from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

Velva truly loved her family – they were first and foremost in her life - she rarely missed a child's, grandchild's, or great-grandchild's activity or program. She always enjoyed attending the Wright County and Iowa State Fair every year. Velva also liked reading, camping, fishing, boating, playing cards, family vacations, hunting asparagus, music and dancing. She never forgot a birthday – baking a cake for everyone.
