Bethel C. Johnson, age 97, of Emmons, Minnesota, formerly of Pocahontas, Iowa, died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa. Funeral service will be 2 PM Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Hope United Methodist Church in Pocahontas, IA, with Pastor Clarence DeBoef officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Monday, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, IA, 50450, and again Tuesday afternoon from 1-2 PM prior to service time at Hope United Methodist Church, 306 – 2nd Avenue NW, in Pocahontas, IA, 50574. Burial will take place at Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas, IA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations or memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 – 2nd Street SE, Mason City, IA, 50401.

Bethel Carmen (Nixon) Johnson was born in Hardy, IA, on December 23, 1915 to Thomas and Cynthia (Quivey) Nixon. She started school at Vernon Consolidated School and road in a horse drawn school bus. They then moved back to Hardy, then to Renwick, IA. When she was twelve they moved to Pocahontas, IA. In 1935, she graduated from high school, and then worked in her father’s store. She married Darold W. Johnson on September 2, 1935. They moved to a farm south of Pocahontas where they retired in 1975 and moved into Pocahontas. Darold passed away on May 29, 1988. In 2005, she sold her home and moved in with her daughter, Bonnie Siemers in Emmons, MN, because of her declining health. Bethel entered and became a resident at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, IA last October, where she felt very blessed with the level of care she received and also where she met many new friends. She was the longest attending member of the Hope United Methodist Church where she was also a member of Sew and Sews. She enjoyed going on bus trips and playing cards, making quilts, knitting, crocheting, counted cross stitch, needle point and embroidery.

She is survived by her two daughters, Bonnie Siemers of Emmons, MN; and Patricia Emerson of St. Joseph, MO; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; three step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darold.
