Mrs. Hoag Dies at 94

Mrs. C. W. [Charles W.] Hoag, 94, died last evening at the hospital in Grinnell where she had been a patient the past two weeks. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Smith funeral home in Grinnell with burial to be made in the Blairsburg cemetery. Mrs. Hoag, a pioneer resident of the Blairsburg community, had made her home with her daughters, Mrs. A. G. (Mary) Terry of Radcliffe and Mrs. Louis (Edna) Fuller of Grinnell, since the death of her husband in October, 1948. She was preceded in death by one daughter and one son.

Virginia Jaycox, daughter of Isaiah and Mary Van Tassel Jaycox, was born Dec. 17, 1863 at Nelsonville, N.Y. At the age of five she came with her parents and older brother and sister to Webster City, Iowa, later moving with her family to a farm near Blairsburg, Ia. On April 15 1891, she was united in marriage to Charles W. Hoag of Blairsburg.

Four children were born to this union: James I., Mary C., Myra, and Edna. She was a charter member of the Congregational church of Blairsburg and in later years a member of the Methodist church in Dows, Iowa. She was a devoted wife and mother, and until her death at the age of 94 years, 1 month and 5 days was keenly interested in world and local affairs. For the last 18 months, she was confined to a wheelchair. She never lost her sense of humor and found pleasure in her family and friends.

Preceding her in death are her husband, son, one daughter, a grandson, her parents, three sisters, and four brothers. She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Mary C. Terry of Radcliffe and Mrs. Edna Fuller of Grinnell; two brothers: LeRoy Jaycox of Mankato, Minn., and Louis Jaycox of Minneapolis, Minn.; 17 grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Hoag were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 1958, at the Smith Funeral Home, with Dr. G. S. Bruland of the Grinnell Methodist church officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Fred Weaver Jr., organist, and Mr. Keith Fuller, vocalist. Pallbearers were Charles Fuller, Jerry Fuller, Gerald Hoag, Dixon Terry, William Terry and Alfred Weirson. Burial was made at Blairsburg, Iowa.
