Funeral service for a longtime Corwith area farmer, Philip E. Puffer, was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Feb. 4, in the First Baptist church at Corwith. Pastor Jeremy Spencer officiated and a special message was given during the service by Mr. Puffer's son, Joel. Burial was in the Corwith Cemetery, the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of Corwith in charge of the arrangements.
Philip Edward, son of Wilford and Lula Beck Puffer, was born in Brazoria County, Texas on Feb. 5, 1911. When he was four Philip's parents moved to a farm east of Corwith where he was raised. He attended country school and graduated from Corwith High School in 1928. Phil was married to Norma Jean Mansmith at the home of her parents at Burt, on Sept. 6, 1933. The Puffers farmed his home place east of Corwith. Mrs. Puffer died in March of 1979 and Phil died of an apparent heart attack at his farm home Wednesday evening, Feb. 1 (1989). He was 77.
Mr. Puffer was a member of the First Baptist Church at Corwith where he had served as Deacon and the high school Sunday School teacher. He worked on the Election Board for a number of years, was Magor Township Trustee and a former ASCS Board member for Hancock County. Last summer Mr. Puffer contributed some playground equipment to the new Corwith City Park. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed all outdoor sports.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter; Jerry, Algona; Joel, Virginia Beach, VA; and Peggy, Mrs. Kenneth Williams of Apple Valley, MN. Mr. Puffer has 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One brother, Paul of Jefferson, IA. also survives. Two brothers, Richard and John, are deceased.
