MESERVEY, IA -- Frances Basener, 75, died Saturday (June 14, 1997) at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Frances Vivian Basener was born on Feb. 3, 1922, in Meservey, the daughter of Christian Jurgen and Pearl Ethel (Prall) Wendel. She was baptized April 16, 1922. She graduated from Meservey High School in 1939, and continued her education at Westmar College in LeMars, where she graduated in 1942 with a degree in education. She taught school for one year each in Goodell, Alexander and Clarion. On June 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Herbert Francis Basener at the Salem Evangelical United Brethern Church in Meservey. They farmed near Thornton from 1947 to 1949, and then moved west of Meservey where they continued to farm. Francis was active in many church activities, American Legion Auxiliary (lifetime member) and Girl Scouts (lifetime member). She enjoyed making quilts for the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as working on family history and playing her keyboard.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert, of Meservey, and their five children: Lawrence and Wanda Basener of Belmond and their three children, Chris and Ann Basener of Nevada, Clint of Pella, and Cherie at home; Velma and Al Durbin of Versailles, Mo., and their three children, Robert Baughman of Columbia, Mo., and Nancy and Phillip Burkhart of Versailles, Mo., and their children, Angel and Ty, and Carolyn and Scott Hall and their twin daughters, Katie and Hallie of Fort Polk, La.; Evelyn and Tom Dail of Greene, and their daughter, Crystal, at home; David and Donna Basener of Meservey, and their four children, Nicole, Nathan, David and Danielle, at home; Nancy and Martin Kroeze of Thornton; a sister, Mildred McFate, and her husband, Warren, of Newton; and a brother, Roland Wendel, and his wife, Erma, of Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents. She passed away June 14, 1997, at her home in Meservey. She is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
