October 14, 1913 --- January 16, 2013

Josie Schaap was born on October 14, 1913 near Kanawha, Iowa, to John and Anna (Eekhoff) Rozeboom. She attended school there for half a year before moving to Minnesota in 1919. She grew up on farms in the Edgerton area, attended country school and graduated from the 8th grade. Josie married Louis Schaap on December 30, 1938 at the Runals Memorial Building and they farmed near Edgerton. She helped on the farm by milking cows and doing chores. Josie was a homemaker her whole life. The couple was blessed with 9 children, 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She especially demonstrated her love, compassion and patience caring for her son, Ron. They retired in Edgerton where she continued to live after Lou died in 1984. Josie lived in the Edgebrook apartments for seven years and after breaking her leg, moved to Edgebrook Care Center in July 2009. Josie died there on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the age of 99 years, three months and two days.

Josie was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton and belonged to the Bethel Ladies Aid. She was an excellent role model for overcoming hardships and still finding joy in life. She liked serving others and showed her hospitality by offering anyone who stopped at her home a cup of coffee and something homemade to eat. Josie also did a lot of gardening and canning. She cared deeply for her family and enjoyed baking, making quilts and embroidery work. Josie enjoyed being a faithful servant, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as friend to others and lover of God.

Josie will be lovingly remembered by her children, Audley (Marianne) Schaap of Castle Rock, CO, John (Eunice) Schaap of Leota, Glenn (Brenda) Schaap of Hull, IA, Darwin (Terry) Schaap of Henderson, NV and LouAnn (Gene) Kuipers of Edgerton; their children and grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Alma) Rozeboom of Leota; sister-in-laws, Harriet (John) VanderHaar of Edgerton, Clara Rozeboom of Leota, Clara Schaap of Edgerton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lou; four children, daughter Anna Lee, infant twins John and Joan and son Ronald; five brothers, George, Bill, Elmer, Harvard (Bud) and Vernon Rozeboom; and three sister-in-laws, Elizabeth, Leola and Emma.
