Sheffield — Melvin Harrison Peyton, 93, of Sheffield, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at the Sheffield Care Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield, with Pastor Ken Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Retz Funeral Home in Sheffield is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Dows, Iowa, to Harry and Mabel (Sarber) Peyton. He attended school there. On Sept. 16, 1939, he married Eva Pletcher in Clarion. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart medal. Following his discharge, he and Eva moved to Chicago, Ill., where he drove truck. Sometime later he moved to Michigan, then moved to a farm in rural Dougherty, Iowa, in 1963. He and Eva farmed for many years. Prior to selling the farm, he worked for the Farmer's Co-Op in Aredale until 1981.

Sometime after his retirement, the couple moved into Aredale, where they lived until moving to Hampton. In 2008, they moved to the Sheffield Care Center. The couple owned and operated Peyton's Place Grocery Story in Aredale for many years. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Aredale, Iowa.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Smit of Sheffield; a son, Mark Peyton of Arizona; a son-in-law, Alan (Pete) Marsh of Lincoln, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Angie Peyton of Falmouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Debbie (Randy) Irmen of Fergus Falls, Minn., Jeff Peyton of Cape Cod, Mass., Terry (Penny) McCaslin of Sheffield, Kevin (Sara) McCaslin of Rockford, Leona (John) Hughes, Penny (Jeff) Bailey and Nikole (Mike) Stonecipher, all of Lincoln, Ill., Vickie (Tony) French of Big Sandy, Tenn., Theresa (Randy) Spivey of Huntington, Tenn., Candace McCaslin of Texas, and Amanda Peyton Davidson of Tulsa, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Victoria Link and Ryan Link, Cody Peyton, Genny McCaslin (fiance Caleb Mosel), JC (Jill) McCaslin, Kyle McCaslin (fiancé Cassie Willert) and Abby McCaslin, Chris McCaslin, Brianna McCaslin and Logan McCaslin, Loren and Landon French, Peyton and Levi Spivey, Naomi Bailey, and Emily, Isabelle and Addison Stonecipher; five great-great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters: Doris, Connie and Lois. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry in 1966; a daughter, Linda in 2010; a son, Terrence in 2011; two grandsons, Timothy and Daniel McCaslin; a son-in-law, Dale Smit; a daughter-in-law, Tommie (Peyton) Forrest; three sisters; a brother; and several sisters- and brothers-in-law.
