Betty Sampson, 88, of Lake Zurich, Illinois, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Lexington Care Center in Lake Zurich, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.

Betty V. Reed, the daughter of Wilbur and Ida (Foley) Reed, was born February 12, 1924 in Hardy, Iowa and lived in Hardy until 1939. Betty and her family moved to Fort Dodge in 1939 and in 1941 she graduated from Fort Dodge High School. On November 28, 1942, Betty married Walter Sampson in Yuma Arizona. She worked for the United States Department of Agriculture for 23 years retiring in 1975. Betty liked to paint, knit and bowl. Walter passed away on September 29, 2006.

Betty was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, a charter member of the Phil Fox Chapter of the Izaak Walton League in Fort Dodge and a past president of the Phil Fox Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.

Betty is survived by her three children, Linda Hempfling of Hawthorne Woods, IL, Jill Fritts of Cary, IL and Walter R. Sampson of Des Moines, IA; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Olive Carlson of Humboldt, IA. She is preceded in death by her husband Walter, her parents, brothers Edwin Reed and Richard Dixon, and her sisters, Ruth Shay, VaLoice Simmons, and Marlys Fredericksen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed towards Hospice of Fort Dodge.
