Virginia Elaine Canute was born May 9, 1916 to Chester J. and Ethel (Haggard) Stewart in St. Paul, Minnesota. She graduated with a BS degree in Education from the University of Minnesota and did graduate work at the University of Wyoming and was a member of the Alumni Association. Virginia taught kindergarten for 17 years and worked for the ISU library for 14 years. She was an active member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of Deacons. Virginia was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, belonged to ISU Women's Club for over 35 years and was very active in the Ames Thrift Shop. Virginia served as a leader and as Board President of the Ames Camp Fire Organization.

Virginia married Russell J. Canute in 1946 and they were married for 46 years at the time of his passing. Virginia passed away December 9, 2012 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion, Iowa at 96 years of age.

Virginia is survived by her son, Jack (Lucila Agbay) Canute of Boone; two daughters, Suann Canute of Miami, Florida and Christie (Mike) Leonard of Johnston; and nine grandchildren and their children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; and a brother, Larry Stewart. Memorial contributions may be made to Collegiate Presbyterian Church.

Memorial Service: Friday, December 14, 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM, Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 N. Sheldon, Ames, Iowa;

Inurnment: Friday, December 14, 12:00 PM to 12:15 PM, Ames Municipal Cemetery, 9th and Maxwell, Ames, Iowa;
