Iola Joan (Berkeland) Kalvig

West Des Moines, IA -- Iola Kalvig, 77, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Please join her family in a celebration of Iola's life held 11 a.m. Thursday, November 15, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church with cremation to follow. A time of fellowship and lunch with the family will be held following the service. Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date at the Norway Township Cemetery, rural Kanawha, Iowa.

Iola, the seventh child of Bertel G. and Blanche (Olson) Berkeland was born April 14, 1935, in Palo Alto County, Iowa. She was a graduate of Fenton High School, class of 1953, and of Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. She taught kindergarten in Kanawha, Iowa. Iola was united in marriage to Elmer 'Swede' Kalvig on September 22, 1957. She moved with her family to Des Moines in 1960 and has lived in the Des Moines area ever since.

Iola worked at Central National Bank and also for Fiserv in West Des Moines. She was a retiree of Bank of America. Iola was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale and served her Lord there in several capacities. Her faith was very important to her and she loved participating in Church activities and being with her Church family. Iola loved spending time with her family and friends, and enjoyed traveling and reading. She also enjoyed music and sports, especially where her family was involved.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Dennis of Spotsylvania, VA, Larry (Marty Haltom) of Urbandale, Tim of Norwalk, Carol (Ken) Calkins and Debbie (Chuck) Ellsworth, both of Des Moines. She leaves nine beloved grandchildren, Brandi (Bryan) Voracek, Jon (Kelly), Dan, Kolbe, and Jenna Kalvig, Kenny Calkins (Meagan Taylor), Mikayla (Ryland) Jewett, Dallas and Caleb Ellsworth. Her great-grandchildren include, Riley, Madison, Alexander, and Kailyn Voracek, Judah and Halle Kalvig, and Anson Jewett. Also missing her are her siblings, Virginia Berkeland, Bob (Jeanne) Berkeland, Harold (Marian) Berkeland; brother-in-law, Oliver Keinholz; sisters-in-law, Eileen Berkeland, Delores Harrenstein, Deloris Kalvig, and Elaine Hegland; and a large extended family. She will also be missed by her loving and faithful dog, Zoey. Iola was preceded in death by her loving husband, Swede; her parents; sisters, Irene Franson and Doris Keinholz; brother, Marvyn Berkeland; sister-in-law, Naomi Hamlin; brothers-in-law, Jerry, Al, and Darrell Kalvig.

Visitation begins 5 p.m., Wednesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephen Lutheran Church.
