Interment: Following the service November 14, 2012 at Oakland Cemetery, Sac City, IACharles Henry Van Sickle, age 87, of Sac City, IA, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Charles was born November 26, 1924, in Irene, South Dakota, to Clifford and Irene (Buckstead) Van Sickle. The family moved around as his Dad was transferred through work from South Dakota to various towns in Iowa. He graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School. Following graduation Charles served in the United States Army during WWII. On May 27, 1946, Charles was married to Jean Vrana at the Presbyterian Church in Manilla, IA. After the war, Charles started working at Central Telephone Company in Belmond, IA, then moved to Sac City. He was baptized and confirmed as a youth and became a member of the United Methodist Church in Sac City when they moved here. He worked his way up, starting as a repairman, and ending up as a manager in the telephone company. He retired in 1977. Charles was involved in community projects as a member of Hy-Noon Kiwanis; Lodge Master with the Masonic Lodge; and an active member of his church. He continued good works, joining the Peace Corps from 1982-1985, and mission work in Frakes, KY along with his wife Jean. Charles enjoyed woodworking and had an appreciation for solid workmanship, making various items for family members. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who cherished the time spent with his family.
Survivors include his son, Oral Edward Van Sickle and wife Connie of Sac City; daughters: Patricia Elaine Wilson of Adel and Allyn Anne Gerdes and husband Gene of Lake View; grandchildren: Tami (Chuck) Rondeau, Shawn Wilson, Stacie Gerdes and Kelli Gerdes, Bryan Van Sickle, Douglas (Rebecca) Houser and Michael (Misty) Houser, Sheila Van Sickle and Diana (Alan) Six; great-grandchildren: Christian and Gabby Houser and Devin Wilmott, Zack, Kyle and Blake Houser, Christopher (Olivia) Brown and Paige Brown, Tim, Heather and Jennifer Six, Lillian Van Sickle, and Madison and Dylan Pate; his sister Leola Goetzinger of Cedar Falls; brother Oral (Betty) Van Sickle of Le Mars; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean; parents Clifford and Irene Van Sickle; parents-in-law John and Mary Vrana; brother Clifford Van Sickle; and son-in-law Mike Wilson.
