March 8, 1840 --- May 12, 1929

Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, who had been in feeble health for the past few years and had been confined to her bed for several weeks, passed away at her home Sunday at 4:00 a. m.

Hulda Elizabeth Pettit was born in Syracuse, New York, March 8, 1840, being in her 90th year at the time of her death. In 1861, Mrs. Smith was united in marriage with John D. Smith at Milledgeville, Ill.

To this union were born three sons. Clair, who passed away when ten years of age, Elmer and Harry of Clarion. There were also two daughters by adoption, Mrs. Ole Wenos and Mrs. Julius Wenos of Moline, Ill.

Mrs. Smith was the widow of a Civil war veteran, Mr. Smith having served three years with Co. K Fifteenth Infantry of Illinois volunteers. At the close of the war the family located at Eldora until 1881, when they came to Clarion which place has since been their home.

Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday at 2:00 p. m., by Rev. F. W. Ortmeyer, pastor of the Methodist church, with interment in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Julius Wenos, Mrs. T. P. Woolsey and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Trickey of Moline, Ill., were in attendance at the funeral.
