MONTEREY, CA - Harold J. Larson died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on May 29, 2012. He was born November 16, 1934, in Eagle Grove , Iowa, to Hazel and Otto Larson. After receiving an excellent education at the Eagle Grove primary and secondary schools, he went to Iowa State University in Ames, where he majored in Statistics and received Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. He moved to California in 1960 and was employed by Stanford Research Institute before joining the faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where he was a Professor of Operations Research and Statistics for 38 years. Among other achievements, Harold was a Fulbright Professor of Statistics in Sao Paolo, Brasil, Visiting Professor at the University of Sao Paolo in Sao Carlos, Visiting Professor at Tamkang College in Taipei and Visiting Professor at the University of Christchurch, New Zealand. He also authored and co-authored five books on probability and statistics, as well as many other publications. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marie J. Larson; daughter, Rachel; sons, Hugh and Douglas and their wives, Jerilyn and Kirsten; grandchildren, Chris, Katharine, Samantha, Nicholas and Margaret; and his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Patricia Larson, and their family. He was predeceased by his first wife, Monice [Shipman] and daughter, Kimary Ann. He was also predeceased by his son, Josef. Plans for a memorial service are pending.
