Clarion Soldier Killed in Vietnam

CLARION (AP) - The family of Army Pfc. Richard Joseph Wehrheim, 20, of Clarion, has been notified that he was killed in Vietnam Thursday when his base at Phouc Binh was attacked. Young Wehrheim joined the army last Aug. 15 on his birthday and went to Vietnam in January. He was serving with the 1st Infantry Division. The youth was a graduate of Clarion High School and attended Eagle Grove Junior College. He is survived by his mother, Mrs, Grace Wehrheim and a sister, Mary Ann. His father died in 1965.

Funeral Services for Pfc. Richard Joseph Wehrheim, 20, who was killed July 27 in Viet Nam will be held Thursday morning at 10 a. m. at St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. A. J. Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in the Eagle Grove Calvary cemetery. Rosary services will be held Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock at the Eyler Funeral Home.

According to Lt. Thomas J. Cooney, who is in charge of the military funeral, Richard was due for a furlough, but volunteered to stay on duty in order to give his furlough time to a friend so that he could meet his wife in Honolulu, Hawaii. Death was due to wounds received after a surprise mortar attack on his base camp near Phouc Vinh, South Viet Nam at 1 a. m. July 27.

Richard Joseph Wehrheim was born August 15, 1946. He attended St. John's School until the 8th grade and was graduated from Clarion High School in 1964. He attended Eagle Grove Junior College for a year and a half. He went into the army on his birthday August 15, 1966. He arrived in Viet Nam in January 1967. He belonged to the H. H. C. l/28th 1st. Inf. Div.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Wehrheim in September 1965. His father was an Iowa Highway commission employee. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Grayce Wehrheim of Clarion and one sister, Mary Ann, of Minneapolis, Minn.
