Earl H. Stalzer, 88, of Humboldt, passed away May 14, 2012 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt with Fr. James Tigges officiating. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt with a parish rosary at 7:30.
Earl Henry Stalzer, the son of William and Sophia (Janssen) Stalzer, was born on a farm near Marshalltown, Iowa on July 24, 1923. The family then moved to Amarillo, Texas where they resided for a short time before returning to Iowa where they made their homes in the Haverhill, State Center, Wesley, and Renwick areas.
On June 29, 1954, Earl was united in marriage to IvoLu Thilges at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona, Iowa. After their marriage they lived on a farm near Renwick for 25 years. In 1974, Earl retired from farming and he built his dream home in Livermore. His home was one of the first to be energy efficient utilizing solar energy. After retirement, Earl and IvoLu ran a daycare in their home taking care of many local children. Earl also worked as a janitor and handyman for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore. One of his prized accomplishments was helping restore the KJ Train Diner Car in Dakota City. IvoLu passed away in 2004 at which time Earl moved into various care facilities starting at the North Care Center, moving to Assisted Living and he spent the final six years of his life at the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
Earl enjoyed farming, woodworking, playing card, spending time with family and visiting relatives. He was a very devoted Catholic. He attended Mass as much as possible and enjoyed praying the rosary. He had a passion for woodworking and made 13 grandfather clocks along with various other woodworking projects.
Earl is survived by his children, son, Dale (Deb) Stalzer of Livermore, and daughters, Luann (Rodney) Christopher of Humboldt and Kalene (Jerry) Berte of Humboldt; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, IvoLu; son, Marlin; six brothers, Linus, Cletus, Elmer, Ralph, Leroy, and Harry; and sister, Bernice.
