Death Came Suddenly June 25th While Out riding With His Family.

The Independent made mention last week of the death of Thos. E. Granger, former well know Northwestern engineer, which occurred on the evening of Jun 25th. The following more complete obituary is taken from the Eagle Grove Eagle:

Former Engineer Thos E. Granger died while riding with his family in their car Thursday evening about 8:30. Tom Jr. was driving and and they crossed the Northwestern tracks in the south part of town, Mr. Granger suddenly straightened out and remained rigid. Knowing that he was subject to heart attacks, he was rushed to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harley Cowan, on South Commercial Avenue and Dr. McNaughton was called. He stated that Mr. Granger was dead before he arrived.

Mr. Granger was among the older group of active Northwestern engineers until he was pensioned about two years ago. He always had a keen interest in the affairs of the day and was frequently called upon to represent his fellow workmen on various committees and on organization work. He was an inveterate reader and well posted on current events and present day affairs. After he was forced by poor health to leave his work on the road, he opened up an insurance office, a work in which he had had successful experience many years ago. He was always willing to give his time and energy for all activities which might lead to the betterment of the community. It was with genuine universal sorrow that his city learned of his death. High blood pressure and heart trouble caused his retirement from active service on the road two years ago. He was apparently in good heath until about three days prior to his death, when he complained of a slight heart attack. He realized that the end might come any time and it did come just as he predicted.

Thomas Emmons Granger son of Philander E. and Eliza Graves Granger, was born in Colo, Story county IA, Dec 7, 1866. He received his education in the public schools at Colo and at Cornell college, Mr. Vernon, Iowa. He became a student of telegraphy and was also associated with his father in the grain business at State Center and at Hawarden where he moved in 1884. On October 17, 1888 he was united in marriage with Miss Effie M. Lantz. In 1895 they moved to Eagle Grove where Mr. Granger became a railway fireman and three years later an engineer.

There are five children; Mrs. Marie Cowan, Mrs. Florence Korslund, Mrs. Helen Kist and Thomas L. all of Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Lillian Webster of Hines WI. Five brothers survive. They are S. M., of Kasota, MN; Frank L., Marmarth ND; J. W. Watertown SD; Chester R. St. Paul MN; and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Young, St. Paul MN; Mrs. Ethel Kaspar Sioux City IA and Mrs. Grace Boyle of St. Paul MN.
