October 9, 1947 --- September 2, 2012

Ret. U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Michael John Howell, 64, of Lansing, passed away at his home on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, following a long battle with heart and lung disease. Mike was born Oct. 9, 1947, the son of John P. and Kathryn (Beek) Howell, in Hampton, Iowa. He lived in multiple small towns in North Central Iowa until they settled in Clarion, Iowa in 1951. Mike attended the Clarion Public School until 1966, when the family moved to Webster City. He was wed to his soul-mate, Mary (Stommel) Howell, on March 30, 1968. Together they had four children; Shelley (Smith) of Leavenworth, Tricia of Lansing, John of Lansing and Misty Price of Topeka, Kan. Mike is also survived by 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Diane Pontius of Fort Dodge, Iowa; a brother, Mark of Seekonk, Mass.; and a niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and a baby daughter. On Jan. 4, 1966, Mike entered the Army and found the profession that he had a calling and a great love for. Always a NCO, he held assignments, of Drill Sergeant, US Army Recruiter, Senior ROTC Instructor and Logistics Inspector for the Inspector General. But his great love was his time spent as a First Sergeant.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
