Corbin Tillman of Brownsburg died Friday after a three-year battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 82. Born Dec. 15, 1929, in Clarion, Iowa, he was a son of the late Ray and Vera Tillman. In 1955, He married Helen Wittman in 1955, and she died in ‘95. In 1998, he married LaDonna Craig, who survives.

Mr. Tillman grew up in rural Iowa and attended Dows High School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served as a mechanic in the Korean War as part of the 120th Engineer C Battalion 45th Infantry Division. He worked eight years as an electrician for the Rural Electric Company in Iowa Falls, Iowa, and 38 years for Detroit Edison near Wixom, Mich. While working for Edison, he won two Proposal Plan Awards for inventions. He retired in 1992 and moved to Brownsburg, where he was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Avon. Mr. Tillman was also an avid collector of insulators. While living in Michigan, he was an active member of the Wixom Baptist Church and the Union Lake Baptist Church. He taught a Sunday School class for fourth-grade boys for several years and actively supported missionaries around the world.

Survivors include children Tim (Julie) Tillman, Nanci (Bob) Slagle, and Kathie (Glenn) Anderson; step-children Darrell (Peggy) Craig, Rhonda (Byron) Bradley, Dwane (Cathy) Craig, Ranita (Gilbert) Martinez, and David Craig; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters Eleanor Sevick, Phyllis Brinkman, Virginia Larsson, Bonnie Foust, and Naomi Maxheimer; and a brother, Burd Tillman. Preceding him in death were a sister, Selma Sue Tillman, and a brother, Bud Tillman.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Baptist Church in Avon. Interment with military rites will follow at Brownsburg Cemetery. Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Conkle Funeral Home in Avon, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the ALS Foundation, Indiana Chapter, 6525 E. 82nd St., Ste. 115, Indianapolis, IN 46250.
