Eagle Grove Woman first Traffic Fatality of the Year In County

Mrs. E. A. Riebhoff, 84, longtime Eagle Grove resident died Friday night at Lutheran Hospital after she had been struck by a car earlier that evening as she crossed an intersection just 1 block from her home. Mrs. Riebhoff was reportedly enroute to a Rebekah Lodge meeting about 7:15 when she was hit by a car driven by Wayne Howard, 24 of Alden. She was walking north on South Lucas and crossing the intersection of Lucas and Second when struck. Howard was driving west on Second Street SW. Howard is employed as a truck driver for the Umthun Company of Eagle Grove. According to Eagle Grove Police Chief Robert Koob, Howard aid he saw Mrs. Riebhoff too late to avoid hitting her. It was snowing and blowing at the time and visibility was obscurred. Funeral services for Mrs. Riebhoff were held Tuesday afternoon, at the Eagle Grove Methodist Church.

Elizabeth Cogdill Riebhoff, daughter of Hester and James Cogdill, born October 13, 1878 in Knoxville, Tenn., died January 18, 1963. Elizabeth Cogdill moved to Burt, Iowa, at the age of 17 where she met and married Eugene Andrew Riebhoff on November 25, 1899 at Bancroft, Iowa. Four children were born to this union, Dellice, James, Aethel and Eugenia. In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Riebhoff moved to Eagle Grove and resided here until time of death. She was preceded in death by her husband who died Feb. 27, 1941.

"Riebe" as she was known to her many, friends was an active member of the Methodist church, the Jaunita Rebekah lodge No. 185, the Royal Neighbors of America and the Womens Club of the Chicago Northwestern Railroad of Eagle Grove. She was on her way to attend the Rebekah lodge meeting when she was struck down by a car and died as a result at 9:55 p.m. at the Lutheran hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Many youngsters, through the years, would remember their "Riebe" as the one who was always full of loving care during those tender years. Others knew "Riebe" as the one who always had a variety of flowers, which were so generously offered at Decoration Day time.

She leaves to mourn three daughters and one son: Mrs. Dellice Cruse, Plainfield, Iowa, J. L. Riebhoff, Mrs. Aethel Phelps, Central City and Mrs. Eugenia Clouss, Concord, Calif.; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, a sister Mrs. C. L. Stomey, Hot Springs, North Carolina, and a half brother Irvin Cogdill, Amarillo, Texas.
