December 4, 1868 --- July 19, 1931
John Omvig, a resident of the Hardy community for eighteen years, passed away suddenly at his home in Eagle Grove while listening to the radio the first of the week, according to word received by friends. Funeral services were held at the Kubitschek and Kastler funeral home in Eagle Grove and at the Trinity Lutheran church southwest of Hardy, Tuesday afternoon. Burial was made at the Rosehill cemetery at Eagle Grove. Mr. Omvig lived on a farm three miles northwest of Hardy for nearly eighteen years. Four years ago he and his family moved to Goldfield and for the past year have been living at Eagle Grove. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, one daughter, Alice, and one son, Jay, all of Eagle Grove.
The following obituary, which was read at the funeral services, appeared in the Eagle Grove Eagle last week:
John T. Omvig was born December 4, 1868 in Norway, Benton county, Iowa, and died in his home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, July 19, 1931, age 62 years, 7 months and 15 days. He was baptized into Christ in infancy, and when he was about two years of age he moved with his parents to Story county, Iowa. There John was instructed and confessed his Christian faith in the St. Petri Lutheran church in Story City under the pastorate of Rev. Nils Amlund. On September 30, 1907 he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Strand at Sioux Falls, S. D., by Rev. H. E. Solum. Mr. and Mrs. Omvig lived in Humboldt county, engaging in farming, continuously for about 21 years, coming to Eagle Grove in 1929 where they have lived since. Two children were born into their home, Alice and Jay, who now together with their mother, mourn the death of a kind husband and father. He is also survived by five brothers, Lars, Tom, Edward, Martin and Emil; also by five sisters, Mrs. Charley Malmanger, Mrs. Erik Malmanger, Mrs. Sven Stout, Mrs. Lewis Stout and Mrs. Joseph Sylvester and by a large number of relatives and friends. Mr. Omvig was a kind man, who endured his suffering very patiently. It was our privilege to minister to his spiritual needs during the nine months of his last sickness, but very seldom did we hear him complain. His sickness seemed to bring him to realize working ran over him. Strong was more clearly his need of the Saviour. He loved very much the 23rd Psalm. He enjoyed very much some of the Gospel sermons which came in over then radio.
