Galen L. Kuehnast, age 87, passed away June 11, 2012 in Escondito, Calif. Galen was born on June 1, 1924 to Louis (Louie) and Ella Kuehnast in rural Thor. The family moved to rural Woolstock, Iowa in 1937. Galen graduated from Woolstock High School in 1943, he then attended Waldorf College and Iowa State University. Galen was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, ending at Hickam AF Base, Hawaii. While serving in the Air Force he was a writer for the base newspaper and played on their baseball team. Combining his sports writing and his college education he became a writer in the Los Angeles area covering stories and sporting events which included the LA Dodgers. He later became a high school teacher at Orange Glen High School in the San Diego area teaching English and Journalism. Galen was united in marriage to Eileen M. Myles on June 21, 1958.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Eileen, of Escondito, Calif., Evelyn Qualters of Riverbank, Calif., Lavonne (William) Oldson of Turlock, Calif., Darryl (Betty) Kuehnast of Summerfield, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Louie and Ella Kuehnast and brother Kenny Kuehnast of Clarion.

ESCONDIDO, CA -- Galen L. Kuehnast passed away June 11, 2012. A native of Thor, Iowa, he spent his early years as a sports writer in the Los Angeles area. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, ending at Higham AF Base, Hawaii. Combining his sports writing and college studies, he became a high school teacher in English and Journalism with a long career in both the Los Angeles area and at Orange Glen High School locally. Mr. Kuehnast is survived by his wife for over 50 years, Eileen M. Kuehnast; sisters, Evelyn Qualters of Riverbank, and Lavonne ( William) Oldson of Turlock, Calif.; and a brother, Darryl Kuehnast of Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service in his honor, will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 20, at Dittus Hall, Redwood Terrace, 710 West 13th Avenue, Escondido.
