February 10, 1924 --- June 28, 2012

Howard Fremont Alberty, Sr. was born in Clarion, IA on February 10, 1924. He passed away June 28, 2012, at the age of 88 in Baton Rouge, LA. A bright student, who excelled in math and science, he joined the U.S. Army to fight in the European theater of World War II, a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning from the war, he graduated from Iowa State University in geology where he married Elizabeth Ann Ruckman of Chicago in 1946. After college, he and Betty set off on a lifelong adventure in the oil industries of NM, CO, TX, and LA, eventually settling in Covington where they enjoyed 46 years, while raising their four sons. As an independent geologist, his most notable discoveries were of the South Pass Block 1 field and the deep gas field at Four Isle Dome in Terrebonne Parish. Other interests included sailing, treasure hunting, cattle ranching, home building, Boy Scout troop leader, fly fishing, and contract bridge. He and Betty were founding patrons of the Art Association in Covington and The Bridge Center in Mandeville.

Howard is survived by his wife, four sons and their wives: Howard, Jr. and Debbie of Prescott AZ, John and Dee, Mark and Susan of Houston TX, and Craig and Ashley, 12 grandchildren and their seven spouses, including 16 great-grandchildren. The family is extremely grateful for the support of Generations Hospice. Memorial Service is at Dunham Chapel on Saturday, June 30, at 11 am.
