Carlyn Bryce Schwieger passed away on April 28, 2012. Carlyn Schwieger passed away in his sleep on his Family Century Farm where he had lived all his life in southwest Franklin County outside of Dows, Iowa. His Wife and survivor, Pamela Kay Schwieger (nee Hite) was with him when he passed away.

Carlyn Schwieger was born in Hampton, Iowa on April 23, 1938 to Howard and Yvonne Schwieger. Carlyn grew up on his Family Century Farm, and was a lifetime farmer ever since his childhood years. Carlyn grew up active in the family farm, 4-H, FFA, and the United Methodist Church where his family had provided the land. Carlyn graduated from Dows High School in 1956. He was recruited to play college football, and accepted an athletic scholarship offer to Iowa State University. While at Iowa State, Carlyn majored in Farm Operations. Carlyn played tight end and wide receiver for Iowa State, and received his numerals, the NCAA equivalent of a college letter at that time. Carlyn Schwieger was in the United States Army Reserve during college, and served as a Combat Engineer, training numerous summers with the Red Bulls. In 1960 Carlyn graduated from Iowa State with a Bachelors of Science in Farm Operations. Carlyn completed the Ag 450 program at Iowa State. Throughout college Carlyn returned regularly on weekends to the family farm to help his family. After college Carlyn came home to take over the family farm with his parents. Carlyn retired all family farm debt, and was the ultimate caretaker of his family, keeping the farm afloat through good and bad years.

In addition to farming, Carlyn taught Sunday School at the United Methodist Church and served multiple times on the Morgan Methodist Church Council. Carlyn had a strong Christian faith and enjoyed church music and signing. He was also active in Republican Party politics. Carlyn served as Morgan township Republican Chairman for over 40 years, and was a delegate to the County, District, and State Conventions. Carlyn was also the third of four consecutive generations to serve in elected office in the State of Iowa as President of the Dows School Board (Grandfather Will = Franklin County Sheriff; Father Howard = School Board; Son Derk = Humboldt County Attorney). Carlyn was a long-time Iowa Farm Bureau member. He served on the Franklin County Extension Council. Carlyn presently served as a member of the Franklin County Soil Conservation Board.

Carlyn met his Wife, and love of his life Pam while at social mixer in Clear Lake. Pam had accepted her first teaching job at Hampton Community Junior High School as the Instrumental Band Instructor after being the solo twirler at the University of Northern Iowa. For his son, Carlyn coached Little League baseball and was a Cub Scout Leader. He was very active in his son's academics, athletics, and legal and political pursuits.

Carlyn is survived by his Wife, Pamela Kay Schwieger of Dows, Iowa, and his son, Derk Karl Schwieger of Bloomington, Minnesota. Carlyn is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Yvonne Schwieger, and brothers, John and Barton Schwieger.
