GOLDFIELD, IA - Gloria Maxine Nelson, the daughter of Harold and Mayme (Hendricks) Thorne, was born on August 26, 1922, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Goldfield and Eagle Grove, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1940. On November 4, 1945, she was united in marriage to Alfred Milton Nelson in Goldfield. They made their home on the family farm west of Goldfield where she lived most of her life. Gloria later moved to the Meadows Assisted living in Clarion before entering Careage of Clarion.

Gloria worked as a telephone operator in Los Angeles, CA during the war and also in Eagle Grove. She worked for Security Savings Bank in Eagle Grove in the drive-up bank and main office as an officer, retiring in 1980. Gloria was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield, serving as the choir director for many years and was a member of the United Presbyterian Women. Gloria had a passion for music, a love of Lake Cornelia and enjoyed traveling- spending many winters in Arizona. She was also an active member of the Evergreen Sporting Association, Bay View Study Club and traveled with the International Wally Byam Caravan Club after retirement.

Gloria passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Careage of Clarion, at the age of 89 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2002; son-in-law, William S. Hackney; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Arends (Merle) and six brothers-in-law, Norman Arend, Ray Fillman, William Collins, William Rarick, Curtis Nelson (Ida) and Donald Nelson. Survivors include her two daughters, Christine Hackney of Goldfield and Pamela Hallenbeck and husband Ron of Ames; two grandchildren, William Hackney, III and wife Heather of Chicago, IL and Katherine Hallenbeck of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Nina Rose Rogers and husband Al of Eugene, OR and Norma Jean Fillman of Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law, Janice Nelson of Iowa City and several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 16, 2012, 10:30 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield with Pastor Sara Hill officiating. Visitation is Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
