Clay Unger, 83, of Aurora, Colo., formerly Cheyenne, passed away peacefully March 7 at New Dawn Memory Care in Aurora. The eldest of three sons, he was born May 9, 1928, in Wheatland to Louis “Lou” Unger and Bertha Ann Brunia. After working as a ranch hand for Swan Land and Cattle Co. in Wyoming, Clay enlisted in the Air Force and served in World War II with the Army of Occupation. He was later recalled to the Korean War, and served stateside so he could be near his new family. He started a career with Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph as a lineman, and retired from Qwest after 30 years of service.
He also spent much of his life, especially retirement years, remodeling and building homes. As a young man, he developed his carpentry skills through training from a distinguished Wheatland architect, a line of work that suited him well. He was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge No. 1, AF&AM in Cheyenne, as a master mason.
Clay is survived by one son, Carl Unger of Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Ann Unger Bowen of Cheyenne and Theresa Unger Kropinak of Centennial, Colo.; the mother of their children, Nadine Unger of Cheyenne; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lou and Bertha Unger; second son, Jack Unger of Astoria, Ore.; and two brothers, Ellis “Doc” Unger of Hanna and infant brother George Unger of Wheatland.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Schrader Funeral Home with Pastor Raul Cruz officiating. Interment of his remains will be in Dows, Iowa, in June, next to other family members. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the University of Wyoming Foundation, with benefits to the School of Nursing, 1200 E. Ivinson, Laramie, WY 82070.
