WASHINGTON, IL - Russell Charles Tallman, 88, of Washington, Ill., died at 10:03 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Ill. Born on June 20, 1923, in Clarion, Iowa, to Joe and Lydia Hamer Tallman, he married Alice Winkelvoss on Aug. 12, 1949, in McKeesport, Pa. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Kathi (Dennis) Rode of LaPorte, Pa.; a son, Randall (Andrea) Tallman of Kenosha, Wis.; two grandsons, Matthew Tallman and Brentt Tallman; two stepgrandsons, Eric Rode and Clifford Rose; and six stepgreat-grandsons. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Russ was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving during the Pacific Theater in the Philippines, and during the Army Occupation of Japan. He graduated from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, and worked at U.S. Steel in Dravosburg, Pa. He then taught six years in Cardington, Ohio, and later taught history at Washington Community High School for 20 years, retiring in 1983. He was an avid woodworker and enjoyed camping and golfing. Russ was a member of Masonic Lodge 325 in Clarion, Iowa, American Legion Post 100 in Washington, Ill., and the Tazewell County Retired Teachers Association. He also was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church in Washington for nearly 50 years.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at Crossroads United Methodist Church. Pastor Tom Goodell and pastor Dan Doty will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington, where military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army and the Tazewell Military Rites Team. Memorials may be made to his church.
