Mrs. John Meier Died here Friday

Mrs. John Meier was taken very ill at her home at Alton Thursday night and passed away Friday morning at 10:45 o'clock. One of her children, Mrs. Katherine Kepler of Eagle Grove, was able to be here when she died. Mrs. Meier had suffered more or less from heart trouble during the past six years and it was a heart attack which caused her death.

Katherine Stallmann was born April 7, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky, the eldest of four children. When she was about 11 years of age the family moved to Wien, Missouri, where she grew to young womanhood. In 1894 she came to Iowa, residing at Granville, where she met John Meier, and they were married at St. Joseph’s church at Granville on October 22, 1895. For 19 years the couple lived at Eagle Grove and there the four children were born, two boys and two girls, but on of the sons died in infancy. The children grew up in Eagle Grove, were married and started homes of their own, and in 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Meier moved to Alton where the became caretaker of the extensive grounds and building of St. Mary’s parish here, a position still held by Mr. Meier.

The surviving children are Mrs. Anna Olson, Eagle Grove; Bernard, Sioux Rapids; and Mrs. Katherine Kepler of Eagle Grove. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church here Monday morning at 9:30, with Very Rev. M. A. Schemal officiating at the requiem mass. Burial took place at Eagle Grove where the infant son was buried. Mrs. Meier was a member of the Rosary society, the members of which attended the services in a body. She was a beloved mother, firm in character, devoted to her family and church, and will be sadly missed in the family and circle in which she was so highly valued.
