DOWS, IA - Fern D. Gorder, 97, of Dows died Saturday Jan. 28, 2012, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the First Lutheran Church in Dows. Pastor Ronald Nelson will officiate. Burial will take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 1, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 100 N. Lee St. in Dows and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Fern D. Gorder, age 97, of Dows, died on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Scenic Manor in Iowa Falls.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 2, at the First Lutheran Church in Dows. Pastor Ronald Nelson officiated. Burial take place in the Fairview Cemetery in Dows. Visitation was held from 5–7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 1, at the Dugger Funeral Home and continued one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be made in Fern D. Gordon’s name to the family.
Fern Deloris Gorder, the daughter of Rudolph and Beulah (Steiff) Rollene was born on May 17, 1914 in Morgan Township, Franklin County, Iowa. She attended rural schools and graduated from the Dows High School in 1931. She was united in marriage to Raymond Gorder on September 23, 1936 in Dows, Iowa, at her parents’ home. To this union two children were born. Raymond and Fern farmed for six years north east of Dows and then moved to their farm two miles north of Popejoy where they farmed until Raymond retired. Fern was very proud of their family farm and said she would never live anywhere else. She lived there 69 years before moving to the Scenic Manor in the fall of 2011.
Fern loved taking care of her home, her family and flowers. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member until her death. She was an active member of the church being confirmed in 1941, a member of the First Lutheran Church Women, a Sunshine Lady. She was an active member of the Dows Senior Center and one of the originating members and over the years held several offices. She was also selected the Wright County Outstanding Senior Citizen in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1982. Raymond and Fern loved traveling and they took many memorable vacations. After Raymond retired, they continued with shorter bus trips. Fern enjoyed these trips and continued taking bus trips after his death with her sister, Lucille.
Fern is survived by her son, Merlin and his wife, Julie Gorder of Dows and her daughter, Marcia Gorder and PJ Parry-Jones of Fort Dodge; grandsons, Lon (Lisa) Gorder of Buckingham, Jeffrey Gorder of Mason City, Steven (Sheena) Gorder of Indianola and Michael (Carie) Burgher of Dallas Center; 8 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Carlie Gorder, Dalton, Carter, and Eleanor Gorder, Hank Gorder, Brooklyn and Brody Burgher; sister, Dorothy (Robert) Dow of Oskaloosa; sister-in-law, Patricia (Clint) Meyer of Iowa Falls; and very special friend, Dena Boor. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Beulah Rollene; husband, Raymond on April 21, 1990; brothers, Milo, Dale and Verl Rollene; sister, Lucille Miller; sisters-in-law, Phyllis and Ruth Rollene and brothers-in-law, Glen and Bruce Miller.
