Ronald Stierwalt was born February 7, 1916 near Lacona, Iowa to John and Maggie Shounkwiler Stierwalt. His family moved to Newbern when he was 2 years old. He went to Graves School, graduated from Chariton High School, and then graduated from Iowa State University in 1939. He was married to Lucille Ashby on June 10, 1939 at her parents home. Ronald taught Ag Science in high school for a number of years in Popejoy, Leon, and Centerville. He then was appointed Marion County Extension Director in 1947 and in the same year moved to the family farm. Ronald was very active and volunteered his time and efforts to many causes. He was the Lucas County Farm Bureau president, a charter member of the Lacona Coop, served in the state legislature, volunteered with Lucas County 4-H, and was named farmer of the year. After retiring and moving to Indianola he volunteered for FISH, and was an active member at the First United Methodist Church.
Ronald was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 2006; his parents: John and Maggie; brothers: Wayne and Lyle; and grandchildren: Marcy Stierwalt and Allen Ruch. Ronald passed away June 26, 2011 at the age of 95 years. He will be greatly missed and honored by his children: Lila (Ken) Ruch of Indianola and Roger (Mary) Stierwalt of Knoxville; grandchildren: Karla (Doug) Halverson of Coon Rapids, Brad (Annette) Stierwalt and Wesley (Barb) Stierwalt both of Pleasantville; nine great grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Marlene (Kenneth) White of Chariton and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
