ALDEN, IA — Shirley Rieks, 74, of Alden, died on Monday, November 21, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 26, at the St. Mark's Catholic Church in Iowa Falls. The Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls, is in charge of the arrangements.
Shirley Rieks, was born on December 20, 1936, to Fredrick and Katherine (Marshall) Hepperle in Badger, Iowa. Shirley graduated from the Corpus Christi High School in Fort Dodge with the class of 1955. She then spent two years at the UNI Teaching College and then later got her BA from Drake University. She started her teaching in Popejoy and then went on to teach at North East Hamilton. Lavern and Shirley were united in marriage July 2, 1962 in Minnesota. Shirley retired in 1984 from full time teaching but still substituted in Alden. Shirley was a member of the Teachers Association and devoted to the Catholic church.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Lavern of Alden; a son, Christopher (Carolyn) Rieks of Alden; a daughter, Kathryn Rieks of Iowa Falls; a step-daughter, Karen Eldridge of Fort Dodge; four grandchildren, Christa Rieks of Iowa Falls, Curtis Rieks of Alden, Conner Rieks of Alden and Logan Rieks of Iowa falls; three brothers, Robert Hepperle of Spencer, James (Betty) Hepperle of Fort Dodge and William (Pat) Hepperle of Portland, Oregon; and a sister, Kathryn Yetmar of Clare. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bonnie Frank and Maureen Williams; a nephew, Joseph Hepperle; and a brother-in-law, Michael Yetmar.
