LE MARS, IA —Dr. Lawrence C. O’Toole, 89, of LeMars, died Wednesday Aug. 19, 1992, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in LeMars, with Monsignor Michael Sernett officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. and a 7:30 rosary by the Knights of Columbus, at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars.

Dr. O’Toole was born Aug. 12, 1903, Eagle Grove, Iowa, son of Dr. Thomas and Mary (Collins) O’Toole. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Eagle Grove in 1920 and from Loras College in Dubuque in 1924. He graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1928. He interned at Harper Hospital in Detroit. He moved to LeMars in July of 1929 and practiced medicine there until Feb. 1976. He married Magadalen “Tod” Hoffman Feb. 26, 1930, in LeMars.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1466. He was a member of many civic, professional, community and religious organizations, such as the Iowa Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was one of the first members of the Association of American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. During his practice he delivered over 4,500 babies. He was the local surgeon for the Illinois Central Railroad for over 40 years. He was a member since 1934 and a past president of the Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the LeMars Elks Club and a longtime member of the LeMars Community and Gehlen Catholic School boards. He was on the board of directors of Security Savings Bank in Ida Grove from 1943 until his retirement in 1991, and had served as chairman since 1947. He was currently Chairman Emeritus. He was recognized for his medical service to the athletic programs in both LeMars High Schools. He was on the board of control of the Iowa Athletics Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary O’Toole of LeMars and Mrs. Dennis (Ann) Hoeksema, of Forest Park, Ill.; three sons and their wives, Larry and Ruth of Oakdale, Minn., Tim and Gail of Oglesby, Ill., and Dr. Daniel and Jane of Oelwein, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeneane O’Toole and Patrick Wolfe; a brother and his wife Gerald and Beverly and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Mentzer and Mrs. Matt (Isabel) Thielen, all of Eagle Grove. He was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Thomas O’Toole and Dr. Roger O’Toole, and a sister, Mrs. Eileen Shoennoehl.
