Maynard B. Woodbury, 89, of Whispering Pines, North Carolina died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011. There will be no public ceremony. Inurnment will be at the Corwith Cemetery, at a later date. He was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Crocker, S.D., to Wallace and Inga Woodbury. They moved to Corwith, Iowa, in 1934, where he completed grade school and high school. He married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Weber, on Jan. 24, 1943, in his parents’ home. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 until 1946, earning his wings in 1944 and becoming a flight instructor. After WWII he finished his degree at the University of Iowa and earned his Master of Arts. He then taught accounting at the University of Maryland and obtained his certified public accountant certification. He went to London and Brussels with the Marshall Plan and then worked for the Office of the Department of Defense (accounting) for the rest of his career. He retired Nov. 5, 1976, moving to Whispering Pines in 1978, where he served on the board of directors and was active in the Men’s Golf Committee.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Wallace, Wendell, Wayne and James. He leaves to mourn his wife, Evelyn; sisters-in-law, Ardyth Woodbury, of San Francisco, and Elizabeth Woodbury, of Alexandria, Va.; many nieces and nephews; and two special cousins, Linda Callin, of Gainesville, Va., and Carol Fuller, of Wellesley, Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374. Powell Funeral Home of Southern Pines [North Carolina] is in charge of arrangements.
