James Lee Hilsabeck, 63, died Friday, October 7, at Friendship Haven, where he was currently residing. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 12, at Gunderson Funeral Home in Fort Dodge with the Reverend C. Peter Maisenbach presiding. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. immediately preceding the service.

Survivors include brothers Mike Hilsabeck and wife Sara, Urbandale, IA; Dr. John Hilsabeck and wife Susan, Milford, IA; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and an uncle who were all very special to him.

Jim was born November 30, 1947, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Leo Duane and Anne (Lupu) Hilsabeck. He was born with Down's Syndrome and was the inspiration for his family and friends to develop programs beneficial for those with disabilities. He received education in Eagle Grove and, later, at Johnston Clay Works. He was employed at the North Central Shelter Workshop (now LifeWorks) for many years. He enjoyed bowling and playing pool, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His family is very grateful for the loving care he received in his later years from the staff at LifeWorks Cedar House and Friendship Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to LifeWorks.
