Carol Naomi Hovland, 85, died peacefully at home on May 28, 2010. The daughter of Christie and Norma McCormick, she was born in Mason City, Iowa on Christmas day, 1924. She attended high school in Bangor, Maine, graduating in June, 1943. She met Kenneth A. Hovland, Sr. at Iowa State College, and they were married on May 16, 1947. In 1948, the Hovlands moved to Rockville, where they started the Reminder together the following year. The first edition of the weekly paper was printed on November 21, 1949, in the kitchen of their third-floor apartment. Mrs. Hovland is survived by her husband Kenneth Hovland, Sr.; her daughter Nancy Gage and her companion, Barry Mellor of Palo Alto, CA, her daughter Janet Jungden and her husband Michael, and their children Naomi and Elena, of Storrs; her son Ken Hovland, Jr. and his wife Carol, and their children Michael and Kristopher of Glastonbury; and her son Keith Hovland and his wife Pam, and their children Amber and her fiancé, Nik Venoutsos of Ellington, Ashly, Kyle and Ariel of South Windsor. "Gramom" was devoted to her family and loved being a mother and a grandmother. Carol and her husband spent their winters at Sunshine Key in Florida, and they made their home in Vernon. Today, her sons own and publish the Reminder News. Memorial calling hours will be held on Tuesday (June 1, 2010) from 5–7 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to KidSafe, 19 Elm Street, Vernon, CT 06066.
